Kathryn Madonna

What does art mean to me? So many thoughts and feelings are associated with my exploration of art through the years. Art began with a love of watercolor and primitive sculpture only to evolve into a fascination with calligraphy — the strict format, the line focus, the shape of letters — and then moved into a career in journalism. And then printmaking came into view with carving, getting my head around reverse images, and the never ending variation of each print that comes off the press. Should not each print be exactly the same because the ink, image, and method are the same? Obviously not.

I went off to UCSB with a double major in art and political science — how do those go together unless you consider a career in cartoons. Sidestep to Hancock College, where two instructors changed my life direction, followed by a transfer to Cal Poly that ended with a journalism degree. A connection with friends brought art back into total focus with printmaking taking center stage as my brain continues to implode with ideas that may or may not quite make the transition to paper.
